Romance Scams a Growing Threat, Say Investigators

Match.com is the leading online dating site with over 20 Million members and serving 25 countries and languages. Many members are using the site not just to find love in their local area, but also abroad, finding romantic relationships with international members. In addition to Match.com, there is eHarmony, Facebook and countless other ways to connect and meet people online. Starting relationships online is a great way to connect, and can be fun and rewarding. This trend also has new risks, however, as investigators and law enforcement agencies such as the FBI report a significant rise in online dating scams, romance scams, identity theft, and other types of fraud from online dating.

For relationships begun online, it's important to know that no site is immune from fraud. Match.com and other match-making sites have no effective way to screen or verify all users, so be aware that there are criminals mixed in with the honest members, and these criminals are actively looking for victims. Their objective is to gain your trust, win your love, and then steal your money or your identity. And, they are quite good at what they do. Experts advise never to reveal your personal information online to anyone not known personally. Keep your credit card information, address and date of birth private. Take your time and be skeptical of any request for money, such as emergencies, etc. If the relationship is progressing, or if you suspect scam, private investigators say the only way to truly verify the subject is via a real international background check company or firm.

The FBI and Wymoo® International reported in a recent NBC dating scams report that online dating scams are a growing and serious problem, and both are receiving more reports of people being scammed. Fox News ran a similar online dating scams report, highlighting the problem with romance scams on sites such as Match.com. Fox News also applauded Wymoo's efforts on investigating these types of cases, and for their work on preventing scams and fraud.

Because criminals are experts at gaining victims' trust, experts say a professional international private investigator is often required to minimize the risk. If a person lives or works in another country, it can be very difficult to know who you are dealing with, and investigators say it is better to be safe than sorry. Experts say to think of a background check as a prudent insurance policy when dating online.

1) Be skeptical of anyone who falls in love over night.
2) Requests for financial assistance is a red flag.
3) Be skeptical of model like photos and "too good to be true."
4) Never share your DOB, address or credit card data.
5) If there is real potential , get a background check.

Online dating and finding love and new friends via the internet is here to stay. Subscribers should proceed with caution, understand the risk, and get a background check when necessary.

All the Best,

  2. I was contacted by this man on Match.com. Unfortunately there are alot of people out there taking advantage of honest hard working people looking for a relationship. These people are scum and are out to get what they can out of people as much as they can without regard to what they do to them or how much they hurt them. Internet dating sites are a place where they prey on people. A man by the name of James Kirkling from Copenhagen Denmark contacted me and I was always asking if this was a scam, he sent several photos of himself, he got me to trust him for months then came the crunch when he needed money. He said that he was in Carolina USA and went to Accra Ghana to work on a contract, after 6 months he needed funds to finish the contract and after alot of questions on my part and doubts, he sent me a copy of this contract and stupidly I sent him money. He has associates by the names of Janet Ologo - Accra Ghana, Belinda Dowuona-hammond - Accra Ghana, Charles Peters - Stone Mountain USA and Abdu Basit Bassa - New York USA. That was over 12 months ago - I am still in contact with him regularly trying to get these funds returned. He assures me that he will be repaying these funds but I am still waiting. DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN AT ALL. Please learn from my mistake - I know there are others that have been taken by these men. Unfortunately we are honest people trusting people and they take advantage. I have an investigation underway into this man and his associates. I am hopeful of getting my money back.

  3. Hi, I am a victim of a scam. I met this guy through Match.com. We dated, he showed me his kids and "ex-wife" pictures and asked me if i have FaceBook. At the time I didn't.He brought me to his Mom's grave-yard for a visit. He told me about his family and how he care for his dad. He said one of his daughter is in Gymnastic trying for future Olympic.Everything he showed me looked real, because he has picture with his kids and not with his supposed "Ex". He even told me that he in u.s. army service and worn the uniform visited me too.I believed him, then as we dated, he asked to borrowed money for his business that he has been working on for two years and if he didn't have the money to continued everything that he work for, will be gone. And then something always came that he needed to borrow money. I lend him my last dollars then he tries to disappear. Because when I dated him, I asked to see his driver license. I remember his age and his bank account that I deposit the money for him.I was missing bank receipts from desk and no one goes to room except him. He always made excuse that he has to deployed over sea. I found out too late. I check my phone called with his called, the phone called was always near where he live or near where I live. and he was never divorced. Everything is a lie and scam my money. I am bring him small claim court, but he already has 12 judgement and liens against him. And I check match.com, He changed his age from 48 to 44. His just checked out 3wks ago or maybe not or just hiding his profile for now . His user name Scopio4ever. He is a Korean-men from Canyon Country,Ca

  4. I too was victim of scam by man on Match.com. These people are professionals and know all the right things to says to suck you in to their trap. He said his name was Samuel Hankins. Born in Brazil. Father:Brazilian, Mother:American. Born Jan. 16/1956. Height:6'5" Address: 1088 Burrard St. Vancouver,B.C. Profile name was:Kentz. Also recieved pics of him (or who he claimed to be) Was working in Maylasia constructing an "Events Building". Was to be paid $2.2 million once project underway. Then scam started!!! Was robbed at gunpoint. 2 workers shot. Needed money to pay hospital bills, then workers, then to pay taxes to get money from bank. Was to get it all back with interest once this was done. Is still trying to get money to come here!Last conversation Jan.26/12. Was naive, trusting, caring person. Believed him. Have lost large sum of money.
Money was deposited in bank accounts in Maylasia. Has been reported to police and investigation by banks fraud department. Know that probability of ever seeing him or money next to nil but warning to others to beware. These people have no conscience. They prey on honest, hard working individuals with no regard for life.

  6. Hi,my name is Rosaria and I am a mature woman on Match.com. I'm so sorry to read that you have been scammed by these horrible people. I've been writing a book about internet dating (my experiences have been colorful). Along the way, I received two approches from incredibly good looking men who had the same sad story: widowers, just getting back into life, looking for love. Sound too good to be true? I thought so. Both had building contracts pending, one in Indonesia, the other in Malaysia. I asked some pointed business questions and they vanished. Three weeks ago, I got a third approach, same story, different handsome face, also expecting a contract, this time in Singapore. I didn't give him any personal information but I did play along on Match for the sake of the book. I wanted to follow the sting and see how much he asked for. $12k, to be sent in three different bundles of $4k, sent from three different Western Union stores. I stalled, pretending illness so I could contact the FBI and Interpol. They said they doubted they'd catch him but took all his info, phone and copies of the messages, the fake contract. Professing endless love after a week of emails? Really? This guy's name is supposed to be Gregory Johnson but I doubt it is. His syntax seems Russian. The hard lesson is to never give a person you meet on a dating site a dime. Not one red cent, under any circumstances. I hope they catch some of these guys but the FBI said if they tracked each one, they'd have no time to go after terrorists...just beware and be careful. Tell everyone, all your friends who do online dating.

  7. A man who says he lives in the U.S. but is away on business in Africa. He says he works for an NGO and needs help. He sends a package to Walmart that I need to pick up. He also sends a paid invoice for the package to be mailed to NY. No money has changed hands. What's going on? Is this a scam?

  9. I was on Match.com for three weeks and started a conversion with 2 men. After about a week of emails and phone calls, I realize that they were both scammers. One goes by the name Sweetapple_89, his name is Richard Willson from Houston Texas and he owns a construction company. He has a 12 year old son named Chris. From the beginning is said that he loves me and I am the women of his dreams. Then the time comes for us to meet and his job takes him to Africa with a contract worth 7.5 million dollars. The next man goes by the name cupiland on Match.com and said his name is Peter Anderson from New Braunfels Texas. He had to spend 2 weeks in the middle east for his oil rig job and lost all his credit cards in the sea. When it was time to return to the States he asked for $2,400 for a return flight and would pay me back as soon as he returned. I told him "NO" and asked him to never contacted me again. I cancelled by Match.com membership and put it in God's hand for the future.

    1. It was a good tyming to find this report , Thanks for posting!!!I was also a victim by Peter Anderson (cupidland).I found him on Match.com on August 4th,2012. All his photos were very nice looking, and we had similar interests. So,I wiked at him first. Peter and I had been connected by Email and skype for a few months. He never shows his appearance in the real life, but his voice was very soft and the way his talk was a kind polite. Then, same thing happened to me... He lost his wallet overseas, he asked for $400( the rest of money for the flight , he said he sold his valuable stuff) for the flight ticket to back to TX. I realized he was a scammer, but still wished he was not.. I was playing for a while to get more info from him, so I recorded all talk on the skype and Email.I sent the file to the FBI web last night.I really can not forgive these type of the guys ,suddenly they are intrustive on someones privacy and steel someone's warm heart who looks for a real love. I've getting a sense of emptiness.....Now, I need to heal my broken heart.

  12. Just had a week long conversation with David Fisher email address fdavid694@yahoo.com. It was too good to be true! He told me that four of his workers died in an explosion and he had to settle with them monetarily leaving him without money. He said he had to travel to China to cash his travelers checks because there was no one in the Philippines that could cash his checks. It was too strange...I called him a scammer and tried to explain that his company was closed until Monday. I told him if the company was his, he can get his accountant to wire him the money he needed or the plane ticket! Be careful girls, this guys is good thank God I was smarter!!!!

  13. I was on Match.com for about six months. I paid by money order and thank god. All I got was guys that worked away (one military and the other one I can't remember but he supposedly permanently lived in Kansas) and had children that their nanny looked after. One had a son and one had a daughter.

Within the second conversation, they both were asking for money. I didn't renew my subscription when it ran out. I am wondering if Match is just simply a big scam to take people's money or I have never had much luck on online dating sites.

He sent me flowers, chocolates, a build a bear with an I love you message. He sent me emails very detailed, and charming. He phoned me at least 4 times a week. I was stupid and ended up sending him money for a glitch he was in with the expectation he was coming to Boston. He ended up failed with the plan and had the nerve to fake more incidents of illness and asked for more money to help him. He was extremely intelligent, well versed and wrote beautifully. 15. Wow....This scam is off the charts. I was on Match for 6 months. I got winks and emails from about 5-6 scammers. All the same. Widowed, one child, parents dead and how lonely they are. All of them are from overseas as they tell you in their emails. Either they are here for a job, they are in Europe at the moment, but will be back in US real soon. I pretty much cut them off first email. Something is not right. Plus they write long silly romantic emails from the get go. They actually read like they are from a woman more than a man. Spelling is all off and they do not dot the "i" 's. They want to get you on Instant messenger right away or say they are not going to be on match any longer -they provide you with a very anglo sounding name, email and even a local cell phone. You will see if you do email them their email address changes quickly to something else. Not a good sign. I purposely got off Match for awhile because I was so disheartened by this scam. I t seemed like thats all there was in this site. Now I am beginning to wonder about Match as a scam service.

He has no family, his wife and son died in 2009 and no credit cards, no bank account, but seems to be living in Turkey on some money. He claims to be renting a car, staying in an apt for work and goes to the gym and out to eat everyday, but has no money to pay his taxes or his workers. He made promises to buy me a new car, take me to Europe and to marry me. I am not comfortable with this realtionship and need some advice. His pics match and seem real, he seems to know a lot about the area we both live in, and speaks very good English. When I started asking specific questions, he disappeared. The other is James Shaw screenname jsaussie04, single with a daughter named Stacey. He had a contract in London, Stacey got sick, he ran out of money and couldn't pay the hospital bill and needed me to send him money. Thank God I have no money. Even with all his confessions of true love, as soon as I informed him that I had no money and gave him a story of my cousin that borrowed 1500.00 to send to her online date that she never saw again he also disappeared. I am wondering if any man on match.com is honest!!!! I was on Match for 3 months in 2011 and 3 months 2012 and both times the only men I seem to attract are these losers. step to greatness, what do you think? lol. I am tired of a life people live by saying they want something and neither do nothing about it nor willing to do so. I don't

know how online dating works but i know it is a medium where two people can surely get to explore each others mind without sentiments. I know it is good cos it allows

us to cut blabbering and really speak our minds without intimidation of beauty and soul stealing smiles lol. Seriously i am one who wouldn't bore you, i had discuss

passion and fun than politics or religion hehehe. How do i make my first impression here? let me give a full biography here.

He says he lives in the Avondale area of Chicago but is in London handling business matters. Please be careful. When a guy will not give out phone number to communicate that is a red flag. If a guy does not initiate or speak about meeting you in person that is a red flag. He also in email uses a lower case "i" and instead of using word women he will refer to as ladies. He says he grew up in Madrid and lost both parents before the age of 18. He will also not give up any other personal info which is smart so there is no way to confirm who he is. I did play along and get a messenger acct for kicks and asked him what time it was in London. I just knew there would be a long pause I'm sure to give him time to google time difference. Just be smart ladies and use common sense.:)

  30. Here is how to find out where the scam is coming from. On a Windows systems, go ahead play along with the possible scammer, tell them to load the messenger but you want to see them on the cam. Press start, then in the box for run, type CMD. A DOS window will open, type netstat -n and all the ip addresses being used will appear, then you can use google to locate the ip, most of the scammers are not even in Ghana, Nigeria, UK or any other place but the USA and they use local services. Some of the scammers text you from a 6 digit number that will appear on your caller id, this might be an voip line or software like kik, yahoo, boodle, whatsapp and so on. I did some research and best is to play along then tell them after you located the ip that you are not interested anymore, use STOP TEXTING ME, they understand. Also copy or print their match.com page right away because most of them will disappear until they are done with the scam then they do it again. Also save all the pictures and when you see it again report the person to match.com or match.CON as I call it. I have never been conned by one, but it was pretty obvious when they all use the same lines and some are verbatim like copy paste. Also look for that in messages, regardless if the text is the same with the same typo it is probably the same person with a different user name.

  32. Don't be disheartened, but just be aware, do hours of searching on the new person you meet. I will give my personal story of how I firstly should of done that and didn't and got scammed and burnt. She claimed she was "Morgan Linda Chris" MORGAN LINDA CHRIS ma-03-03 sri semarak apartment Puchong Selangor Kuala Lumpur Malaysia pioneer014u@yahoo.com +60169148952 though match.com usual story Dad dead lives with elderly Mum, only child, 31, drop dead gorgeous, she sent me lots of photos but only a few seemed to be recent, also all were very low resolution. Lots of emails, hours on chat, only talked briefly on phone she would claim her ph was old and network was bad. Yes i was a fool, and sent her money. In the end I had a guts-full so actually flew to malaysia, the address was real but a Chinese family lived there, they had never heard of her, nor had the apartment office. The next girl was by all accounts great but as a previous entry mentioned, the profile description was a bit lengthy and perfect, on chat she really nice, her emails were lengthy and i began to suspect when i could see stuff copied and pasted in emails and later in chat sessions, she went on skype seeing me but claimed her webcam didn't work, so never heard her voice, she lived in Ghana and wouldn't give me and exact address.:Hellen Anim Ansah hellenlovely43@yahoo.com BEWARE SHE IS A SCAM even has a facebook which has no activity, and the photos she sent were EXACTLY the same ones on her face book. http://www.facebook.com/hellen.lee.961 In my investigations, the 3 photos she uses are an american actress, in her emails she would say "I love it when I am in your arms and you hold me" in the middle of a huge essay with many grammar and spelling mistakes. She asked me for $400 or a new laptop, I said I would send it, she gave her "brothers" address, so then i had her on, she claimed to go to Uni, I said i had a good friend there who's husband work in the embassy and was often flying between NZ and Ghana, so he would bring laptop free give it to his girl and then could meet her and get it, reasonable? NO WAY she could;t have that.... scam revealed. NOW Asian dating .com is better than most, ONLY SELECT A DATE that has a VERIFIED PHOTO, and get your own photo verified, only by a passport scan and they check. This girl and I went to a separate chat, her profile had no huge "perfect" essays just, "ask me later" she emailed photos, lovely. but not "perfect" or suggestive... we wee on skype 1 hour later, she called my phone without me asking, she actually talks on chat, not just says repeating "i love you" She gave me her address, I google maps it,she has called me on the phone numerous times and we have talked, unlike the other two with excuses the phone is old or the network is bad. Here is a website you can go to to check for reports on names and emails:
    http://www.russian-mates.com/blacklist/gss/
also learn how to do an IP search, and see if this awesome bloke or gorgeous girl isn't from Nigeria:
    http://whatismyipaddress.com/
And then be friends first...if the other one starts unrealistically claiming undying love etc etc in he second chat session... up go the alert flags OK and also pray about it, for protection and wisdom... and then find that guy or in my case awesome girl of your dreams... 33. Please be aware that Richard Beadley, John Beaux and Joel Woods are all fraudulent people. They use the same man's pictures, a pilot. This scam is based out of Nicaragua and yes I was scammed, but not out of money just time and pride. Richard contacted me through Match.com, said his wife (Isabella) died in childbirth and his daughter Jane was living with him mother Rebecca in Manchester England while he was working for the ATA in Syria on a special mission. Said he was from CA but just moved to Hampton, VA. Ladies he is good and he will end up breaking your heart. So, always get an email address and Google it as well as photos. That's my advice.

    3. I am a mature lady (a widow) and was contacted by this guy, George Winfred, and although I was suspicious from the outset, nevertheless, the attention was good. He proclaimed undying love almost from the word Go and sent cards and songs via YouTube. After a few days I decided to Google the name and found it appeared on this blog so decided to keep it going to see where the journey took me. It ended with a request for money to buy an air ticket to get back from Afghanistan to sort out his mother who suffered with near blindness. The story much the same as above - had a home in Hampshire, widowed, one daughter, Priscilla and aged mother who lived in Birmingham. We had exchanged email addresses and when I discovered the entry on here, requested that he used a different email address for me which was a gmail address also. That was interesting as it then had a thumbnail photo of him (different to the one on his match, com profile) and when I double clicked on it, it opened another window which gave an address as Hampshire Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts!! I also discovered by clicking on the photo on there, it revealed more photos, two of which showed him piloting a small aircraft!! I am not sure that the photos aren't all a front as the more I think about it, the more I think it was more than likely written by a woman as it was too flowery by far for most men. Also the standard of written English was poor so I think he / she was probably not English speaking as their first language. My response to the request for money was actually quite sarcastic as I told whoever that I had been ahead of them most of the time and was just waiting for the catch - and also asked how the weather was in Massachusetts. Needless to say I have heard no more.

    4. I was contacted by one George Winfred who describes himself as British with medical qualifications from various Medical institutions in America. He then told me he had an added Army qualification as a Colonel , providing Primary Health Care in Helmand in Ahghanistan. He says he has a nearly blind mother in Birmingham and a sixteen yrs old daughter. He hasn't told me yet where his daughter lives. However I smelt something is not right. I tried to read his profile again on match.com but he is no longer there and hasn't answered the particular point about his disappearance from the match.com website. The email address for this person George Winfred is the same one you have quoted which is georgewinfred494@gmail.com.There have been three email exchanges between me and him and his language is very flowery ,proclaiming that I fit the description of his dream woman. He also claims that the other women he met only fell for his looks and not for his intellect. I am not going to pursue further contact but I am concerned as to how come there are so many fraudulent people on match.com site and how do they allow people to get on with minimum details in their personal profile?

  37. Watch out for CLASSIT64 - Neel Rhashan - 49 - supposedly from Atlanta, GA on Match.com. Says he came to the US from Indonesia 11 years ago - American father/Indonesian Mother. The classic scam - Widower w/ 9 yr old son (Dean) who is homeschooled. Only child - parents deceased - wife died 2 yrs ago during childbirth. Says he is a building engineer and running his late father's jewelry business. He is working on a gold contract and goes to London. Then when gets back and has to go quickly to Ghana, Africa to oversee the mining of the gold. Upon arrival his phone does not work and his son's luggage with PS2 & games are stolen. Asks you to send new phone and PS2 and games. Once he gets - he lets about a week go by and then hits you up for the payday - $60K to pay the company who needs to test and certify the gold to be pure. VERY convincing about his caring for you. Sends you songs like Shaina Twain's From this Moment on and Kenny Rogers "Lady". Don't be fooled by this. I was smart enough not to send money but did fall for the phone and PS2. Feel lucky when I read all the other posts and watched the June 2011 ABC 20/20 "Online Dating Nightmares: N.Y. Woman scammed out of Thousands".

    He lives in Ontario, Canada.
He will not go on Skype.
He gave me his home number no cell phone.

He told me name of church he attends and the school his daughter goes to.
His profile name is DTQ 837, says he is from Palm Beach
He says he was born in France, and was raised In Denver, Colorado.
He also said I was the woman he was looking for all his life.
I received a daily e mail for the last 3 weeks.
When we spoke on the phone he has a very strange voice and accent. Not French at all!!
Immediately I thought he sounded Asian , he can't pronounce the r.
He left for Spain on 8/1/2013 , he e mailed me a cell phone number to reach him.
Also when he called me it only showed a 6 digit number and then unknown number twice.
    Monday 8/7/2013 I received an e mail
He said he was robbed at gunpoint and they had taken his laptop wallet and credit card.
That same evening he called again saying that he needed a laptop to complete his engineering job.
I told him I had no money and he needed to contact the company he was doing the work for.
He tried to make me feel guilty, saying he couldn't believe I wouldn't help him.
    Fortunately it didn't work.
    I didn't loose any money.
He did asked me to take my profile down from match. Com.
He said he was a jealous man and didn't want no one else to approach me.
He send me the song from this moment from shania twain also!! Lol
His e mail is rlance503@yahoo.com, I did a reverse e mail search and it came back e mail does not exist.
He didn't get any money out of me but he did get my heart.
    I'm extremely sad, I feel stupid !!
    My emotions are a mess!!
I really fell in love with this whole fantasy!!
He said he was coming to meet me in 6 weeks with his daughter .
That I had changed his whole life!
That we were going to be together for ever!!
    I'm so distraught!!!

    2. Sounds like you and I had the same guy. When I met him online, he was an Italian American, living in North Carolina with his daughter. Said he was a Civic Engineer. In the course of our romancing, he ended up being invited to bid on a contract in London. That was about the time he emailed me the videos of Shania Twain...the exact same one you mentioned. I fell for the fantasy too. way too similar to not be the same guy. He was so in love, I was his world now, his everything, and we were going to be together forever as well. Said he and his daughter would come visit me when the London trip was over. So many details too, that made it hard to know he was scamming me. He ended up so sad, he ran out of money. I helped him. then he needed more money...and when I didn't offer, he guilted me horribly for not wanting to help the man I love...outright psychological toying...then when I did say no to him...we argued. I even avoided him for many days after I found out who the real people in the pictures were. His voice sounded kind of Italian and kind of french on the phone. We had only 3 short voice conversations. A lot of craziness emotionally. He is still attempting to lure me to answer emails. I have his phone number in London. I have reported him to the FBI and the UK authorities. I would love for him to be held accountable. I gave him money, sorry to say. It's so hard to talk about...how could I go that far for a guy I never even met...He was really good though with Mio Amore, My Love, and all the days in and out of chatting, emailing, etc....on how our lives would be as a couple...and our families. I even emailed photos of my family to him, as welcome to a family. I'm so sorry you and I went through this. He is still telling me in email that he will never leave me, that when he gets back in the states he will prove he is real to me. And he has my address. He sent me roses a few weeks ago with a box of chocolates. A very confusing thing to go through. I am very sad, hurt, disappointed...How can I trust myself or another man ever. He sent me poems...all the ques they are saying online to watch out for...I didn't know, because I didn't educate myself before going on the dating site. He found me the same day I went on the site. I thought it was some magical event. It was just nonsense. I am very distraught. I miss the the good things I thought were occuring, I miss that companion who would talk and listen to me...and I'm so sad he did that to me, and I allowed. We're just going to have to move on and know, WE are worthy of a wonderful man in our world who will offer good things and be there, be real, and see them. This scammer guy has a long road ahead of him, as he is in no way getting anything near our hearts desire with his own life. The scamming life is alla lie and there's no joy in it. I will you well, Magali. Namaste

  47. The above information I listed were locations I shipped supplies and sent money to. I know the above information is false, I just wanted to list everything I had to help anyone else that might fall in love with a possible man scam.

I know I will never receive any of the money I sent. As of today, I am devasted, sad, hurt and scared. I am ashamed, disappointed, embarrassed and in huge debt all for nothing!! I let this man into my personal life, we talked about God and have the same beliefs, how can someone be so cruel and dishonest and still live with them self? How can people lie and hurt another human being? It makes me sick!!!

I still believe in my faith, and I believe God will punish "Marc Jordan"

If anyone has any words of encouragement, please send them my way as I am struggling to find myself and to get myself back in order to be this amazing, beautiful, single mom and a professional working women that God has created me to be.

It’s amazing what we do for love....no money can buy love and happiness.

Please reach out to me to give me hope, strength and encouragement. I am too embarrassed and ashamed to talk to any one...I really need to hear I will be OK...

Maybe I can help you as well to get through this horrible experience...

  50. Ladies, watch out for Paul Hoffmann (passionateguy426@gmail.com). I am certain he is a scammer, as he has ALL the telltale signs. The problem is, I scared him off when he asked for my full name, and I refused to give it to him. I was TRYING to get him to ask for money, so I could bust him and tell Match. ALWAYS look for these warnings in anyone (these were his too)
    Grammar and syntax are off
    Construction profession
Seems to be madly in love right away
    Calls you sweetie, dear, etc
    Parents are dead
Single dad of one 7-year-old daughter
Working a construction job in Africa
When I asked to see photos, said his camera was stolen
Wants you to IM via Y! Messenger
Wrote insanely long, flowery, cheesy emails
Keep those emotions in check, and keep an interest in multiple guys at once, ladies. You'll more easily be able to tell the legit guys from the scammers that way. Scammers are out there; it's a shame, but it's reality. Set up an email account with NO identifying information and use that just for dating sites. DO NOT use your last name! Share no personal info! Trust is earned. Make 'em really, really, really earn it. And don't give them money. Seriously.

    1. Well the fact that someone ask for your full name doesn't mean they are scammer. You shouldn't put yourself out there if you have trust issues and never try online dating. From my research scammer don't give out details about them how are you able to get his full name? You need to find out point before posting them.

    1. yes he sounds very similar to a man called calvin didier, same story, but mother lived in florida, and had a place in glasgow , scotland and would be back after 4 weeks of course that never happened, had to go to the phillapinesto finish contract and the rest is history, I never parted with any money, but I did play along for a while , when I realised how many inconsistancies there were, best advice is to block them altogether, I live in Scotland, so they reach every where again it was through Match.com, who do not want to know.

  53. One more story....Carl Milst, born in Arhus, Denmark of British father and Danish-Aussi mother. The only child, no siblings, no children, no friends. Field Architect/ see LinkedIn. Starting reestablishing his late father's jewellery business. A polite, mega intelligent man. Knows how to make up stories. Looking for that loving, caring, special woman. Willing to relocate anywhere as long as he can be happy with that special one. carmilst@hotmail.co.uk. Profile on Skype: Carl Milston, Northallerton, North Yorksire, Storbritannia. Scanned copy of false passport. Business trips to South Africa, then to Ghana where his father left him an investment in form of uncut gemstones. What a BS!!!. Made me his only beneficiary(!) of the stock of the stones, that I never asked for. The man is intelligent, his emails and wording impaccable! The person's name that colleceted my money transfers to him is Charlene Danhuaq, Accra, Ghana.Due to delays, he run out of cash in those parts, and he never uses any form of credit cards or electronic banking due to some losses years earlier.
I still can't understand how I belived in every word of this scammer. I regard myself an intellignt woman, have been around in this world, lived in different countries myself, also in South Africa, know a bit on various cultures and nathionalities. His profile was taken off Match.com almost immediately after we had made contact with each other. I thought the fact was strange, but..a beautiful explanation from his side made me belive in him. Well...never again will I ever let a man fall in love with me within a few days time. I even got delivered 24 beautiful red roses with a card and a teddy bear to my residential address in Norway. That was before he suddenly had to fly to Ghana to sort out things regarding the stock of the gemstones. On his way home from Accra he apparently had a healt incident at the Airport, fainting and breaking a few bones due to an unfortunate fall. I started receiving emails from a "doctor" that I did not belive in. Well, the story is digusting, as I really gor to like him. Carl Milston is a scammer without a doubt! Let's hope that what goes around comes around. Uses a mobile number that is not a british number..found the number on Android Mania.eu. I did make a promise to myself I'll meet him face to face one day. Do not belive anyone that emails you a scanned copy a passport!

  54. Has anyone heard of a man name Michael Smith on Match.com with username Blueoceans_67. He has a local (408) area code and had to leave suddenly on a trip to an oil rig in Texas due to some emergency then to a business trip in Aberdeen, Scotland. He claims to be in Aberdeen, Scotland now waiting to come up with enough money to pay the tax on a vessel that is carrying his crude oil heading back to the States. He sounded so down and seems like he was running out of options. He has not asked me for money yet, but I have a feeling that it is coming soon. I have been talking to him on the phone and emailing him for the past month. He has an accent and very well spoken and writes very well also. He claims to own his own company and work in the energy sector. He has been divorce for about 4 years ago because his wife cheated on him with his best friend. Also, he is an only child born and raise in South Africa and went to college in Oxford, UK and now living in San Jose, CA. If this seems familiar, please reply.

  55. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have been communicating with a man I met on Match.com name Michael Smith who claims to own his own business in the energy sector. After chatting for a few days, he suddenly had to leave for an emergency on a rig in Texas then after that, a business trip to Aberdeen, Scotland. He is currently now in Aberdeen awaiting to come up with enough money to pay tax on a vessel carrying his crude oil back to the United States. He has not ask me for any money yet. He goes by username blueoceans_67 on match.com. I received a call with caller id from the UK with a number starting with 44_70 . I did some research and most said that these numbers are rerouted to make it seemed like it is coming from UK but actually it is from Nigeria. He has send me many pictures and it is all of a same person. The pictures seems very real and does not look like it is taken from a magazine. He claims to be born and raised in South Africa and went to college in Oxford, UK. His parents are dead and he is an only child. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please reply and we can chat more.

  56. My scammer's name is Anthony Morgan, email is anthonyoneone@hotmail.com. Born in Frankfort, Ky. Has been in Texas. Is a oil rig contractor and currently in Dubai. Widow, wife died in car accident, mother living in London where she came from, father is dead, no children, age around 51, talked to me about 3 weeks via email and text, very expressive emails although had mispells and lots of hehehe and LOL in it, says I was an angel and the love he was always looking for, I actually talked to him, his accent sounds like New York, he called it unsorted, was suppose to be coming back to the states, I was to pick him up at airport, my sister became very concerned and made me promise not to, told him he had to make his own arrangements to get here, he said ok, but then I confronted him on text about being a scammer and asked him to set up video chat to proof he wasn't, said ok and never heard from him again. Makes me leery of any one new who has similar profiles.

  60. FIRST OFF - know that if you help these people you can be in trouble because of money laundering and other types of "crimes." You don't realize it, but people get in trouble all of the time for things they think are okay and participate in, and then get in trouble for some jerk who doesn't even really exist. Especially if they are asking you to move money around or send packages to different places, etc. Wow. I bought into this stupid crap too - James Evans who is a widower with a 7 year old child. He really had me going with his flowery e-mails and what gets me is that he seems very smart. I'm a college-educated, mature woman who works in a good profession, and I am so embarrassed that I got hooked into this. Luckily, it only lasted a week, but he had urgent business in London over Easter weekend and then asked me for money when he was in London and was having trouble getting the contract completed. I knew better, but because of my personal situation, I got so sucked in. I mean, leave your 7-year old daughter on Easter weekend? Now, I wonder if any of them are real. Beware when they don't answer specific questions, like, who is taking care of your daughter while you are in London when both his parents are dead and his wife died of Ovarian Cancer. He capitalized the O and C. The real giveaway is when I gave him my cell # and I got kind of mad and asked why he had a California area code but is in the state where I live. And I also said I wanted to meet him and was tired of the e-mails and texts. He would never answer anything specific. Looking back, I KNEW that if it sounded too good to be true it is too good to be true. He didn't answer my text but just kept e-mailing me and ignored my questions. Just glad I didn't send any money and feel so badly for everyone who has done this. I looked at the FBI website and found out this happens a lot.. I mean, really? He's an architect, has two dead parents, a 7-year old daughter, and he's 54 years old? And he loves to cook, work in the yard, etc. and bake cinnamon rolls from his grandmother's recipe? They use your interests and turn them to their advantage. I'm very angry, but I think I'll be more careful from now on. I need to spend less time on the site too and try to go places to meet real men.

  61. First lady that wanted to message me on match.com said she was in Ghana, despite saying she had just come from helping her mum at her shop! I asked a few pointed questions and she disconnected. Very suspicious. Now I'm wary of all users with "TEXTME9274658374" type usernames, or any ridiculously attractive women from the other side of the country who take a sudden interest in me. Much better luck sticking with people within a 50 mile radius.

  62. I went on Match.com in early May 2014. I was "winked' at by a Jeffery Reus Stevens, jeff_stevens2013@yahoo.com originally from Germany, claims dual citizenship, a son named Jerry who lives with his maternal grandmother in the UK, parents passed away, he lives in the US now, but he is an international traveler building his own company as a Construction Engineer. I became suspicious early on when we had planned to meet and he had to go to Brazil, but would only be gone 3 days. We would meet when he returned. He asked me for my address so he could send me flowers as an apology for the delay. We continued to converse via instant message on yahoo and text at 843-410-8421. I received flowers from a local florist, then a gift basket and then jewelry from FTD! Then the next delay, he had to go to Ghana to review his contract and meet with local officials. His ploy first came for clothes. He hadn't packed for such a long trip. He had an associate Tayviah Cornelius +233208676543 DOB 21st May,1980, who he wanted me to send money to in Accra. Mr. Stevens didn't tell me how much he wanted, said any amount would do. I sent it via Western Union but I cancelled it before it was picked-up and received a refund. At that point he said he was glad he didn't get the money from me because he felt so bad about taking money from me. Then he continued to make his play telling me he intended to pay my bills, I told him no and won't give him any information. He said "we" were going to buy all sorts of things and he was going to take care of me for the rest of my life. I needed to trust him the way he trusted me. Next thing I knew, while I was at work, Sears attempted to deliver something to my home and had to leave a tag. This completely freaked me out and when we talked that night he said he was shipping things to my home to be sent to his new home in Ghana to furnish it. He told me to see how much he trusted me because he just sent things to me without even asking me for permission because he knew he could trust me that much. While we were on IM, he tells me that something was just delivered. A Bose theater system was on my porch bought at Sears.com. Now I'm sure something is wrong so I opened the invoice to the package and found the BILL TO ADDRESS. I did a reverse address look-up and it was the home of a 65 year old woman from across town with a completely different name. I did the reverse look-up on the phone and email address too. They both came back with no name or personal identification. I went as far as to do a background check through Intelius.com to find there was no one in this state with that name, address, phone or email. I got off IM before he could ask me for money again and called my local police to report that I thought he was scamming me and had stolen this womans credit information. My local police told me since I was not the victim, they couldn't do anything. but if I did nothing I could possibly be charged with possession of stolen goods and accessory after the fact. Nothing could be done unless the person whose credit card he was using made the report. The next day he sent me a text asking me to pick up a PS4 from Target. I informed them and Sears about the scam and I've spent hours and days returning items, contacting people and fraud departments trying to get this guy caught. I've blocked phone numbers, cancelled email accounts, and screened calls. I hadn't heard from him in over a week until today when I come home and have two more packages from FTD on the front step. I contacted them previously to return the jewelry and let them know about the scam. Apparently they don't get it.I want this to stop. I don't want the reminders of how bad some people can be in this world. I don't want these things delivered to me reminding me of this horrific situation. I refuse to be a victim in this and I want this person or people stopped so innocent people are not hurt by them financially. I just hope this is read by others who will take heed and be cautious.
