With internet usage worldwide higher than ever in 2012, more users are now also finding love online, and more people are becoming victims of romance scams than ever before. The Better Business Bureau, the FBI and private investigators say the romance scam threat is real, and a growing problem for people in the United States and other countries.

It is a fact that sites like Match.com and Cupid.com are less than interested to conduct background checks on their subscribers and are more interested in their subscription fees. After all, a match making site is not in the private investigation business, and conducting dating background checks and verification is not their area of expertise. They could however outsource or partner with a reliable investigation firm. The countries with the highest concentration of criminals conducting romance scams via the internet are Ghana, Nigeria, Philippines, Ukraine, Russia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the U.K., Romania and Colombia. But, experts say many criminals now operate from developed countries such as the U.S. and Canada, and the problem is now global, with no country or website immune. If it’s online, it’s at risk for scams.

Private Investigators Say Online Scams Still a Major Threat

According to a recent study provided by Symantec, the company dedicated to develop internet security and ant- spyware products that brought Norton to the world, a person connected to the internet is approached 14 times per second by cyber criminals, in the U.S. only, and is a potential victim of at least of one scam. During 2011, 430 million Americans were victims of cybercrime; most of these internet scams came from sources injecting viruses to computers or laptops that had low or none virus or anti-spam software and were accessing the internet unprotected.

Most of these attacks came from links to corruptive sites or emails often disguised as important news coverage, faked videos of the death of Osama Bin Laden or Fidel Castro’s, a special offer brought by Apple after Steve Jobs passing, or stars giving away iPads where people would be redirected to a corrupted website. Short links or URLs are often the passage for a virus.

Millions of accounts with bank information were taken from hackers hitting Sony’s Play Station, Epsilon (a marketing firm) and even the Central Intelligence Agency was targeted.

International private investigators warn that business scams and romance scams continue to see steady growth on an annual basis. Most of the contacts initiated by cyber criminals are initiated on sites like Facebook, Match.com, Linkedin and other major social networking, job networking or online dating sites. Internet criminals pretend to be looking for love, a business partner, investment or other profitable venture, when they in fact, are looking for your money. What allows the criminal operations to continue and keep growing, increasing the risk online? Investigators say that criminals have the advantage because they operate from developing countries where law enforcement is inefficient and corrupt, and lacks the resources to go after criminal groups. Also, jurisdiction remains a problem for prosecutors who try to put the crooks in jail. A London or Hong Kong or New York based FBI agent may not have much success when trying to convince local police in Malaysia to assist an investigation, for example. Consumers and business people need to stay vigilant.

Capt. James Roberts and Brent Cinnamond Discuss Terrorist Threat in U.K.

The risk for terrorist attacks in London and throughout the U.K. continues to be problematic for national security, despite efforts made by national and local law enforcement, as well as the international efforts of the British Armed Forces and allies. A failure to protect the United Kingdom border and disregard for the enforcement of immigration law in the U.K. has fueled a major demographic shift. Once a predominantly Christian and Anglo-saxon population with a strong patriotic heritage, the U.K. today is a boiling pot of cultures and immigrants that come from all over the world, including the Middle East and India and other nations. Many of the immigrants (legal and illegal) in the U.K. are Muslims with different allegiances and world views.

Capt. James Roberts, a former member of the Special Air Service (SAS), says that radical ideology and threats from the Islamic population within the U.K. are a constant concern for police agencies as well as the military. Counter terrorism experts say the problem is primarily rooted in ignorance. Poverty and a lack of education and opportunity leads many to believe in the violent cause, as youths are easily influenced by other radicals. After all, wearing a bomb on a suicide mission to murder hundreds of innocent people is not a sane proposition. Such extremist ideas would be better left in the Middle East, if they cannot be eradicated altogether. Patriotic citizens are hoping for a change before it’s too late.

Finally, as in nearly all the scams, a request for payment will be made. This can be for a down payment, a payment for shipping, a guarantees, or just to check the victim’s “credit”. In other cases, the criminal may not ask for payment, but rather he will gather sufficient information from the victim so that his identity can be stolen, or other important business records can be stolen.

Don’t think it can’t happen to you. Some of the best minds in your industry or investments may be working for the other side – the criminal side. It can be highly profitable and tracking these criminals down and having them prosecuted can be a major challenge. Healthcare business is becoming a good source of income for the Philippine economy. Medical care for foreigners and even health care tourism is rising. Foreigners are coming to the country to take advantage of the relatively good care at a great price, compared to services offered in developing countries. Many in Asia are shocked by the recent discoveries of crime rings in Southeast Asia. In the past days, over 600 people have been arrested with charges of internet fraud and scams. As we read through the News lines, our eyes get wider, because we’ve seen this ring getting bigger, emerging mainly in Malaysia in partnership with China, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Although the scam and fraud types have varied, the criminals are organized and are targeting small businesses, multi-national corporations and investors seeking access to the Asian economy.

According to the NBI, “the cost of 300 grams of Gecko is $1,160 USD and the Health Department in the Philippines is really concerned of the big scam locals are facing, because geckos do not cure, and people are asking for credit loans to be able to pay for this medicine, putting themselves in real danger.”
